The Avalanche Canada Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 (AST1) Course will provide an entry-level decision-making framework that is based on the most advanced knowledge available.

CERTIFICATE 1

Avalanche Skills Training 1, developed by Avalanche Canada, focuses on cultivating essential skills for safe backcountry travel.

Blizzard Academy's seasoned guides dedicate the first day to delving deep into the fundamentals of snow science, terrain evaluation, risk management, planning, and emergency response. This initial day takes place in a classroom setting to ensure effective theoretical instruction.

Day two is dedicated to practical, on-snow application of the concepts learned on day one. It focuses on refining basic skills, practicing new ones, and implementing safe travel techniques. Participants engage in basic snowpack assessment, acquire critical companion rescue skills, and develop a new perspective on evaluating terrain.

The minimum age for the standard AST1 certificate is 16, Students between the ages of 12 and 15 will receive a “youth certificate”.
