The Avalanche Canada Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 (AST1) Course will provide an entry-level decision-making framework that is based on the most advanced knowledge available.

Recognizing the unique challenges of Australia's backcountry, characterized by whiteout or blizzard conditions, falls on ice, and occasional avalanches.

This extended 3-day course seamlessly blends the standard AST 1 Avalanche Canada curriculum with an additional day dedicated to Basic Intro to Mountaineering and Alpine Navigation. 

The AST 1 ICE/NAV course equips participants with essential mountaineering basics and navigation techniques, enabling them to travel safely through Australia's distinctive alpine landscape. By integrating these elements, the course offers a comprehensive education that enhances participants' safety, decision-making, and readiness for the challenges of this unique alpine environment.

The minimum age for the standard AST1 certificate is 16, Students between the ages of 12 and 15 will receive a “youth certificate”.
